There are multiple factors that can be regard as the causes of this disease. Environmental factors, hormonal factors, and genetic factors are significant in the development of this condition. Studies have reported that about 30% of individuals with hidradenitis suppurativa have other family members affected by the disease. Furthermore, genetic susceptibility, including mutations in the gamma-secretase/Notch pathway, and irregularities in both innate and adaptive immune pathways (such as type 1 and type 17 helper T cells), are shown to play a role in this condition.
