The exact cause of HS is remains unknown. However, it is known that the disease is associated with genetic predisposition, hormonal factors, smoking, diabetes, high-calorie carbohydrate-rich diets, and obesity. Patients with physical signs of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and hyperlipidemia are under a higher risk for HS and should be scanned. Additionally, there are studies suggesting a threefold increased risk of HS in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Some studies have also reported findings indicating that zinc and vitamin D supplements may alleviate HS lesions.
